The Piltdown Man was "discovered" by amateur archaeologist Charles Dawson in 1912, and was widely accepted as a missing link between humans and apes. The fossil, as well as much of Dawson's work, was posthumously proven to be a fake in the 1950's. The jaw(not provided here) came from an orangutan, and the skull fragments came from a 15th century human. Because of this hoax, paleontologists falsely believed for decades that the human shaped brain case was the first feature which homonids developed, rather than a human-like face.
