This barge nowadays acts as a tourist attraction and has been somewhat adapted to be used to show people around the canals, the old city of Coevorden and former peat grounds of the Northern provinces of The Netherlands. Originally it was an almost empty hull that was filled up with cargo, mostly peat, and that had some benches to transport people as well.
These type of boats were originally "powered" by women (!) that towed the boats from one side of the canal using ropes and long wooden beams.
Later horses were used to do the towing. Nowadays a diesel engine does all the work.
This boat in particular is of the exact type that was used by Vincent van Gogh when he traveled from Hoogeveen to Nieuw Amsterdam, where he stayed for three months.
Today the room where Vincent spend his time in Nieuw Amsterdam can be visited by tourists. It is part of a museum / restaurant called the "van Gogh Huis" in Nieuw Amsterdam in the province of Drenthe.
In Dutch this type of boat is called a "Snikke".
This Snikke called "Johannes Veldkamp" can now often be seen almost directly in front of the "Van Gogh Huis" where it has one of his three landing stages.
Printing info:
I have split up some very large STL parts in order to make them suitable for printing on smaller printers. The original STL files are still there too though.
Some parts need some support while printing.
When all parts have been printed, used the pictures for reference and glue all parts together (CA glue recommended).
Happy printing!
