young king alfor's sword, from voltron: legendary defender!
modeled this myself based on screenshots from the show, so minor liberties were taken here and there in re: dimensions and length. the final print is about 36'' in length from pommel to tip.
estimated print time: ~17 hours (make sure to print pieces vertically!)
for support, there's a 0.385 in diameter hole running through the entire blade. a 3/4'' wooden dowel, such as you might find at most hardware stores, can be worked through the length of the blade.
warning: depending on your printer, the tolerance of the dowel hole can get pretty tight. if you can't work the dowel through the longer portions of the blade, a good alternative is to cut the dowel rod into sections and stick as much as you can into each piece of the sword.
finishing & painting
i started with a layer of xtc-3d to fill in the layer lines and provide a lovely sandable surface. from there, it was lots of sanding with 80, 120, and 220 grits, making sure to user a sandable filler primer every so often to reveal areas that needed more work. once i was satisfied with the finish, i hit it with a white spray paint base coat, then hand painted all the other colors with simple store bought acrylics.
