The project 885 Yasen Class Submarine (NATO Codename: "Sevrodvinsk") is the newest multirole fast attack/land attack (SS(G)N) nuclear submarine from the Russian Federation.
Construction on the first Yasen, named Sevrodvinsk after the shipyard where it was constructed, began in 1993, but with the fall of the Soviet Union and later collapse of the Russian economy, the boat was not completed until 2011.
Intended to succeed both the Akula (project 971), and Oscar class submarines, the Yasen represents Russia's latest attempt to match acoustic stealth parity with her American counterparts, while also providing a multirole boat capable of land attack with cruise missiles. Despite the SSGN designation, Yasen is also intended to be employed as a fast-attack hunter-killer submarine.
