I have always been frustrated by the fact that no major model company has ever produced a decent model of Skylab. 3D printing has allowed me to solve that problem! Here is my interpretation of the Skylab orbital space station. I’ve made it to match the 1:72 scale of other Apollo spacecraft models available from Dragon Models. This way I could have everything at the same scale for the first time in my life!

This is more complex than my other uplinks, but if you’ve ever wanted a good sized, nicely detailed model of Skylab, I think you might like this one. I certainly hope so anyway!

Parts for the model are divided into three subassemblies. I suggest building one at a time, then connecting the three together. I have also included parts that allow you build it as designed (with both solar panels in tact), or as flown (one solar panel missing). A decal sheet is included for detailing the solar panels.

The truss supporting the solar science section (sub assembly 3) is the hardest part to assemble, so I’ve included several files that allow you to see how they go together. I suggest you build each section of the overall truss independently, then glue them all together.

Keep in mind that the pentagon truss part (Skylab Part 2-01) is to be used only to help align and assemble the first truss section and will need to be cut off once the entire truss has been built. The truss will not fit over the cylinder until this part is cut away!

Extras are included for detailing sub assembly 1. I couldn't find a direct reference to where they actually belong, so I'm sorry to tell you you'll have to refer to online pictures and decide where you want them for yourself...

Yes, the real truss was built of round pipes, but the flatter pieces here are much easier to create and work with. Overall it was a fun build for me, despite it taking so long to get right. It scratched an itch I‘ve had for very long time! Enjoy!
