Before the Suez Canal opened in 1869, the only one way to reach Asia by ship was to sail around the entire continent of Africa. In 1488, Portuguese nobleman Bartolomeu Dias and the crew of the Sao Cristovao became the first Europeans to do so, further opening the doors to Asian exploration.
