"A satyr, being half-man, half-goat, of Greek mythology, languorously holds in his arms a bacchante, and his free hand denudes it. The bacchante, delighted, with her mouth half open and her eyes half-closed by the approach of ecstasy, seems to repel and attract her at once. The eroticism of this group caused a scandal at the Salon of 1834. The mythological subject is no more than a pretext for a realistic representation of non-idealized naked bodies."
