Elven Longsword

Stop right there, criminal scum!

Yet another Elder Scrolls prop. This time I present you the divine Elven Longsword. The mesh was designed by Bethesda Studios back in the first years of the 21th century and ripped by me from the Oblivion.bsa file, located in the original game directory. As for all my game props, I use the GENIUNE game mesh. The low-poly mesh in it’s purest form, the very thing you’ve been holding and using in-game. The only thing I’ve done is cut it into 7 parts using Meshmixer. The blade is close to scale and therefore reasonably large (1000mm), but the total printing time is not that bad given there is little to no infill.

Printing instructions:

  1. Print the blade parts (1, 2, 3 and 4). I used 0% infill, 3 walls and 0.2 resolution

  2. Print the part which joins the blade to the guard (5). For this step I used 10% infill and 0.2 resolution.

  3. Print the Guard (6). I used supports (>40% overhang), 3 walls, 10% infill and 0.2mm resolution.

  4. Print the leaf-shaped pommel. I used supports (>40% overhang), 2 walls, 0% infill and 0.2mm resolution.

Assembly instructions (IMPORTANT):

I did a lot of research on joining two PLA parts together and what tends to make the strongest joint. CA glue came up, but this did not stand up to the stress the joints had to handle.

Therefore I fused the whole sword together using heat!

  1. Heat up a steel plate to just around 200C and just lightly brush each joining half to the metal plate, this will be enough to melt, but not deform the plastic. Quickly join the two pieces together and it will become just as strong as if you would have printed it.

  2. (optional): Prime the model and paint it to your liking or according to the added original texture.

  3. Post that make, or pay with your blood!

Now you should rest and meditate on what you've learned.
