Overview and Background
SpaceX is a rocket company founded in 2002 by Elon Musk in California USA, with the goal of making humanity a multiplanetary species. A cornerstone of making humanity multiplanetary is lowering the cost of access to space, and a cornerstone of that is designing re-usable rockets. The Raptor engine was conceived to achieve this, and has three key goals: - Re-usability - High efficiency - Mass producable - Fueled by Methane (which can be harvested on Mars)
Modelling the Raptor engine
It started with people posting high-quality photos of the Raptor engine on the Nasa Spaceflight forums. From there I started a model and added layers of information to it. Regular posting of progress on the fourms for feedback / speculation on the Schematic helped gain a better understanding of how the engine worked. Note: The Raptor engine is still evolving rapidly, and will likely change in the future. This model is of SN (serial number) 18 that featured in a photo by Musk in April 2020
