RADARSAT-1 (R1) was a Canadian Earth observation satellite launched in 1995. Equipped with a synthetic aperture radar, R1 was able to map the Earth regardless of rain, clouds or smoke. Images captured by R1 have been used in disaster relief efforts around the world. R1 had a life-expectancy of 5 years but operated for 17 years.
