The 'Whomobile' that Jon Pertwee drove in 'Invasion of the dinosaurs' and 'Planet of the Spiders. It is to scale with the 5-1/2" action figures. This is the Mk II design as it appeared in 'Spiders'.

The model has working steering and space for lighting behind the translucent headlights, indicators and break lights.

Theoretically there is sufficient space for a motor and radio control, but I leave that to someone else.

As with all my designs, the parts are joined using a peg and glue system with short pegs cut from unprinted filament. Depending on the quality of your printer/filament you may need to ream the holes with a 2mm drill bit.

The screen for the canopy was cut from a piece of really flexible blister pack plastic. I cut an 'L' shape roughly to size. Glued it in place at the top using a hot melt glue gun. Then trimmed it to size in situ using nail scissors and then glued it at the bottom edge as well. Any blobs of glue that push the canopy out of position on the bottom edge can be flattened using a hot knife.

I had intended wheel axles would be made from unprinted filament as well, but in the end I decided to use short lengths of coat hanger wire instead. so the wheels will need to be reamed to a slightly larger diameter.

You should be able to figure out how to assemble the steering by seeing how it works in the video.


How I Designed This


The only dimensions I could find on the Internet was 14ft by 7ft wide with the fins extending 5ft from the ground. All other dimensions were scaled from photos harvested from the internet, or just guessed to what looked right when printed.

I'm not happy with all the curves. I'm sure someone else can improve on it. Also, looking at it in profile, I didn't allow enough facets in the curve of the nose (whilst, I believe, this is an easy fix in Tinkercad, it would require a complete redraw in Sketchup).
