The MP18 was designed by Theodor Bergmann in 1916. It wasn't until 1918 that most of the kinks had been worked out and it was introduced into German service purely for stormtrooper units.
it would later be copied to death by every other nation in the world but the first official version was the MP-28 which largely just improved the magazine. The original used a Luger snail drum which couldn't handle the speed it needed to feed at.
