When I began 3D printing, I first started with the standard prints of Benchy and Yoda. They are great but super overdone, and not all that interesting. So using Sculptris, I created a sick looking vampire that allows you to test your printer and calibrate it. Plus, who wouldn't want a scary vampire gargoyle thing in their house anyways, right?
The vampire can be scaled easily with little supports required. You may be able to print it without supports but I haven't tried it. The model should contain everything you need to recognize printing issues and problems. Note, this model is a solid piece so don't print it too large, unless you really want to.
