Tons of thanks to profezzom for his Marksman-H combat remote.

The goal of these parts are basically to have printable parts for a Training Remote scratch builder that doesn't have access to the tank model kit parts.  I tweaked some of profezzom's parts a little bit in OpenScad and Sketchup and made sure the dimensions would work to fit on top of the model.

There is forum discussion of building training remotes on RebelDroids.Net - and make sure to check out profezzom's source thing.  RebelDroids.Net also has a wiki and several reference photos and build logs.

Notes:

Print the required number of each part.  Note that the "tank hatch covers" are only on the top sphere or the original prop, though some people may add them to the bottom if they want.

Many of the parts will print without support or rafts, however supports will be required for the commander's hatch, gunport and hatch cover at least.

The horseshoe is small and probably requires rafts and supports

Some of the other small parts may do better on rafts depending on your printer

The sphere can either be printed or store-bought.

Instructions

Overview

Many thanks to profezzom for his Marksman-H combat remote.

These parts are intended to be applied to a sphere per Frank Cerny's plans (he built the prop for FanBoys).  Those are available on RebelDroids.Net

I included a hemisphere if you want to print a sphere, however you can purchase an appropriate sphere instead.

These parts are intended to replicate the model parts of a scratch build.  Since the styrene is easy enough to cut per Frank's instructions, those are not included here - find some 1mm styrene for those.

Parts list.

Parts are labeled after the description in Frank's plans of the model kit parts

  • Obtain a sphere (or print 2 hemispheres)

Printed:

  • Bracket (8x)

  • Commander's Hatch (8x) - supports

  • Gunport (8x) - supports

  • Horseshoe (16x) - supports and raft

  • Baffle (8x)

  • Tank Tracks (8x)

  • Tank Hatch Cover (8x top only) - supports

  • Tank Wheel Large (24x)

  • Tank Wheel Small (16x)

  • Truck Rim (8x)

From 1mm styrene:

  • Center equator patches (8x)

  • Middle stripes (8 sets of 3 or 24x)

  • Truck rim rings (8x)

  • Bottom patch (1x)

  • Top patch (1x)

Scotchlite

Styrene Patches

It is intended that the patches are cut per Frank's plans from 1mm styrene.

I've included a PDF with appropriate outlines that could be traced, laser cut, or whatever.

It should be noted that the big rings around the truck rims deform around the sphere (see Frank's notes).  I estimated the notch that would need cut to conform, however I have not actually tried those, so you may prefer to follow Frank's suggestions and trim them when applying them.

Assembly

As mentioned, this thing is intended to provide the model kit parts that can be assembled per Frank Cerny's planswhich can be found on Rebeldroids.net

Since the 3D printed parts might be a little thicker on the bottom, and I left them flat for the most part, you may need to use the sandpaper trick to get them to match the sphere's shape.  Put sandpaper on the sphere and then gently sand the bottom of the part as needed.

Most parts are small enough that probably isn't really necessary.

Finishing

Frank Cerny's plans also describe how he finishes the Training Remote.

There are also some build logs on Rebeldroids.Net (currently in the just-starting phase), and Rebeldroids would love to see your build logs there as well.

Thanks to Frank Cerny for his plans describing how to build a Training Remote!

Thanks to Rebeldroids.net for a discussion place and reference photos.

And Special Thanks to profezzom for his OpenScad plans which made this a MUCH easier project to attack.  Many of the parts here are very close or identical to his parts.  The hatch cover, tank tracks and horseshoes are the parts I modified the most.  I would have never gotten this far without his model.
