As we are looking at Ancient Egypt this term, and will be designing a Shadoof (or Shaduf), I created this to show the children a working model of one.
A Shadoof is an ingenious invention used in Ancient Egypt, and still used today. The idea is simple. You lower the bucket into a water source (the Nile), then lift and tip into an irrigation channel to water the crops you are growing in a nearby field.

Bucket and Counterweight
In the example photo a paper clip is used to connect the bucket to the arm - but cotton / string would be a better option.
The bluetac counterweight could be coloured to look like clay.
Originally designed using Morphi on a MacBook.
